A Barnsley and Leeds based charity - that distributes surplus food and donations across Doncaster, Barnsley, Rotherham and Wakefield - is calling for action to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
FareShare is urging the government to off-set the cost of re-distribution, so food that is not sold goes to those who need it.
Gareth Batty told us most of what is thrown away by manufacturers and packers is good quality - but it is too expensive to hand out.
He said: "A lot of it comes from over production, or it could be a slow down in retail sales - especially over the last few weeks where we have had bad weather. But, also, things like technical errors, labelling errors and general logistics which means the food doesn't get to where it should be on time."
The charity is hoping to reach 100,000 signatures on it's 'Feed People First' petition, so the issue can be discussed in Parliament.
