Wath upon Dearne police station 'needs re-opening'

Wentworth and Dearne MP John Healey has made the demand.

Pressure continues to be put on South Yorkshire Police to reopen Wath Upon Dearne's police station - as almost 500 people have signed a petition.

Wentworth and Dearne MP John Healey is renewing his calls for a permanent base there, in a bid to restore community policing and get a neighbourhood presence across the the Dearne (including Hoyland, Swinton and Brampton).

He says there's been some progress, but he wants to see action:

"They're looking at a new base in either Wath or Swinton, but I need to keep the pressure up.

"It's no good our neighbourhood police officers and PCSOs operating out of central Rotherham; they waste too much time coming up here.

"I think it'll help the police. Individual officers do a great job, but they have one hand tied behind their back when they operate out of central Rotherham. We need that regular link; that permanent base".

In a statement, South Yorkshire Police say they're not planning on re-opening the station. They say they have a room at Montgomery Hall where they can work from and hold weekly drop in sessions.
