Saturday, June 1st
COMMUNITY MOSAIC PROJECT (which this year will take place on Saturday 28th September between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the local secondary school in Goldthorpe, Astrea Academy Dearne on Goldthorpe Road) is launching a community mosaic project on Saturday 1st June (10 a.m. – 1 p.m.) at Goldthorpe Pentecostal Community Church (Market Street, Goldthorpe). The idea is that local residents and community groups will make a large community mosaic to be exhibited at the festival and permanently displayed in the area after the event.
The launch session will work on the centrepiece for the mosaic (featuring the festival’s logo) and then mobile mosaic workshops will tour different community groups who will work on individual squares that will form a border for the overall mosaic, showcasing the wide variety of interests in the Dearne area. “It’s a great way to champion creativity and celebrate community, which is the aim of the arts’ festival,” said Julie Turner (secretary for the group.) “We’re so pleased that local groups working with children such as the Brownies and Guides, Dearne Kids and Station House want to get involved, as well as local schools and groups meeting in different locations such as the libraries in Goldthorpe and Thurnscoe and the Snap Tin Café. Each group will work on their logo or design representing what we love in our area and then these squares will form a border around the centrepiece to make a mosaic celebrating all we love about the area.”
“One of the aims of the festival is to give people opportunities to be creative and to learn new skills,” said Julie. “Here, local artists Ruth Waterworth and Julia Harris have been instrumental in designing work for us to do in a new medium, using tiles. We think mosaics are a great way to celebrate our community, since we can all have a part to play in the finished mosaic!”
If you want to be involved with the project, come along to Goldthorpe Pentecostal Community Church on Saturday 1st June to have a go between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The committee will also be involved in a variety of community art pieces throughout summer, all of which will be on show at the festival on 28th September.
