Dearne FM looks at the people from Barnsley involved with the games

The Olympic opening Ceremony this afternoon will signal the start of 2 weeks of sporting history as London 2012 is celebrated in style.

 

All week on Dearne FM we’ve been speaking to Barnsley people involved with the games hear they’re stories here.....

 

MONDAY 

 

Hoyland’s John Mayock represented Britain 58 times in the 1500 and 3000 metre making it to 3 Olympic games. On a recent visit to the borough he spoke to Dearne FM’s Sarah Maine about returning to the borough and training for a games....

 

TUESDAY

An army of Olympic officials are on their way to the Olympic Park to play their part. They’ll be tasked with making sure each of the competition’s go by without a hitch from calling the athletes up to measuring distances and checking who crossed the line first. 3 officiators from sports clubs in the Dearne FM area will be there including Janette Tomlins from Wombwell sports club; she’s been telling Dearne FM about her preparations...

 

 

WEDNESDAY

Children from Kings Oak primary school in Wombwell beat off competition from 250 other schools to be part of the opening ceremony. The youngsters impressed judges with their presentation on Italy as part of a national initiative to get children involved with the games. They’ll now form the guard of honour for the Italian team at tonight’s ceremony....

 

THURSDAY

The Barnsley Newham partnership has benefitted the Dearne FM area over the past 4 years. It’s seen Olympians past and present visit the borough, Children visit the Olympic park and our sports clubs receive funding. Sarah Maine takes a look back at how Barnsley’s benefitted from London 2012....

 

 

FRIDAY

Dearne FM’s met Barnsley's sportsmen and women including Swimmer James Kirton and High Jumper Adele Lassu as well as former Olympian and torchbearer Dorothy Hyman (pictured) she gave team GB her tips for success.

 

Barnsley has 2 participants who'll be hoping to bring gold home to Barnsley, Mexborough’s Amy Oliver gets her Olympics underway at lords in the archery whilst Ed Clancy will defend his gold medal in the men’s team pursuit.....
